Climate and Health Protection Act

Summary#

The bill would create an Office of Climate Change and Health Equity within the Department of Health and Human Services. It would direct the department to publish a national plan within one year to help public health and health care systems prepare for health effects of climate change. The plan would be reviewed at least annually. The bill also calls for a science advisory board, health impact assessments of selected federal laws and programs, and periodic reports on research and progress.

What it means for you#

If enacted, the bill would support public information, health risk tracking, preparedness tools, and guidance for communities and health care providers. It gives special attention to communities facing greater climate-related health risks. It does not set out direct services for individuals.

Expenses#

The bill authorizes $10 million per year for fiscal years 2026 through 2031 for the Office, $2 million for the national plan in fiscal year 2026, and $500,000 for the advisory board in fiscal year 2026. These are authorized amounts, not a guarantee that the money will be appropriated.
