The bill would allow Medicare to cover certain services provided by pharmacists starting January 1, 2027. The services must be allowed under state law, be services Medicare would cover if a physician provided them, and be provided in a health professional shortage area, medically underserved area, or medically underserved population. The bill also directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop pharmacist-specific codes as needed.
If you have Medicare and receive qualifying pharmacist services in a designated underserved area or population, those services could be covered under the bill. The pharmacist must be licensed and legally allowed to provide the services in that state.
For covered pharmacist services, Medicare payments would equal 80 percent of the lower of the actual charge or 85 percent of the physician fee schedule amount for the same services. The bill applies to services provided on or after January 1, 2027.
