This bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to study whether parts of the Monterey Bay area should be designated the "Monterey Bay National Heritage Area." The study area includes Monterey, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and San Luis Obispo counties, and any nearby areas with similar heritage aspects. The Secretary must consult the State of California, local organizations and governmental agencies, Tribal Governments, nonprofit organizations, and other appropriate entities, including the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership. The study must be conducted in accordance with section 120103(a) of title 54, United States Code.
The bill authorizes only a study; it does not itself create or change any land designation. Local governments, tribes, nonprofits, and other groups named in the bill may be asked to provide information or input during the study. Any decision to create a National Heritage Area would require additional steps after the study is completed.
