LAB Personnel Act of 2025

Full Title:
LAB Personnel Act of 2025

Summary#

This bill prohibits reductions in the laboratory workforce at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). It defines the laboratory workforce to include positions at DEA forensic laboratories, such as forensic chemists, fingerprint specialists, digital forensic examiners, and other lab positions. It also covers DEA positions that will be moved to a forensic laboratory that is being constructed or finalized as of the date the law would take effect. The bill exempts that laboratory workforce from hiring freezes or workforce reductions related to spending cuts, reprogramming of funds, or the probationary status of employees. The bill also states that nothing in it limits the Attorney General’s authority to manage Department of Justice employees for misconduct or poor performance.

What it means for you#

  • If you work as a covered DEA forensic lab employee, this bill would protect your position from hiring freezes and certain workforce reductions described in the bill.
  • If you hold a DEA position scheduled to move into a qualifying lab under construction or finalization at enactment, that position would also be protected as described above.
  • No publicly available information on how the bill would affect other workers, contractors, or the public at large.
