Starting October 1, 2026, the Department of Education would use an identity fraud detection system to review each federal student aid application. If an application raises reasonable suspicion of identity fraud, the Department must notify the applicant and the colleges they selected. The Department must also report on the system and evaluate it each year.
If your application is flagged, a college cannot pay you federal student aid until it verifies your identity in person or through a live, real-time video check. The college must notify the Department and keep a record of the verification.
