Providing Veterans Essential Medications Act

Summary#

The bill would require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to either reimburse a covered State home for certain costly medications or provide those medications directly. A medication qualifies when its average wholesale price for a month’s supply, plus a 3 percent transaction fee, is more than 8.5 percent of the payment the Secretary makes to that home for the veteran’s care that month.

What it means for you#

For veterans receiving nursing home care at a covered State home, the home could choose to receive reimbursement for qualifying medications or have the medications furnished to it. The bill does not describe changes to other care or services.

Expenses#

The bill provides no total cost estimate. It would require reimbursement or the furnishing of qualifying medications, but gives no dollar amounts for those expenses.
