Energy Committee Spending Authorization

Full Title:
An original resolution authorizing expenditures by the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Summary#

This resolution authorizes the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to spend money, hire staff, and use personnel from other federal agencies (with consent) while carrying out its duties. The authority covers March 1, 2025, through February 28, 2027. The resolution was introduced by Senator Mike Lee and referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration.

What it means for you#

The resolution sets official permission for the committee to pay for its operations. It affects how the committee can fund hearings, staff, and related activities. It does not itself change any programs, regulations, or services available to the public.

Expenses#

The resolution sets caps and some spending rules for three time periods:

  • March 1, 2025 through September 30, 2025: total not to exceed $4,394,583. Within that amount, up to $17,500 may be for individual consultants or organizations, and up to $8,750 may be for professional staff training.
  • October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026: total not to exceed $7,533,571. Within that amount, up to $30,000 may be for consultants and up to $15,000 for staff training.
  • October 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027: total not to exceed $3,138,988. Within that amount, up to $12,500 may be for consultants and up to $6,250 for staff training.

Payments are to be made from the contingent fund of the Senate upon vouchers approved by the committee chair, except for certain items that do not require vouchers (for example: annual salaries, telecommunication services from the Sergeant at Arms, stationery purchases, postal services, certain copying and recording services, and franked or mass mail costs). The resolution also authorizes agency contribution payments from the Senate account for "Expenses of Inquiries and Investigations" for the same three periods.
