President creates commission to advise on military spouse challenges

What this does

Who leads and who joins

• Chair: the spouse of the Secretary of War. If that person cannot serve, the Executive Director (designated by the President) performs Chair duties until a new Chair is named.
• Members: spouses of senior military leaders and certain senior enlisted leaders (examples listed in the order include spouses of the Secretaries of the Army/Navy/Air Force, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, service chiefs, senior enlisted advisors, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and others the Chair or Executive Director may invite).
• Membership is contingent on the spouse’s continued service in the listed position.

Key administration details

• Members serve without compensation but may receive travel reimbursement and per diem as allowed by law (5 U.S.C. 5701–5707), subject to availability of funds.
• The Department of War will provide funding, administrative, and technical support as permitted by law and existing appropriations.
• The Federal Advisory Committee Act applies; functions under the Act (except reporting to Congress) will be carried out by the Secretary of War per GSA guidance.
• The commission automatically terminates two years from the order date unless the President extends it.
