B.C. certifies FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG expansion, with more approvals still needed

British Columbia has issued an environmental assessment certificate for FortisBC’s proposed LNG expansion on Tilbury Island in Delta. FortisBC can now seek final approvals; the certificate is not the last required approval.

• Project: A new 142,400-cubic-metre storage tank, a liquefaction facility capable of producing up to 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year, and a natural gas receiving facility.
• Timeline and jobs: Construction is expected to take six years and create more than 1,000 jobs. The facility could support up to 100 long-term jobs once operating.
• Estimated economic effects: FortisBC projects $3.1 billion in construction costs, $1.7 billion added to B.C.’s GDP during construction, and $700 million annually during operations.

The project still needs other required authorizations before it can proceed.
