Summary

Summary#

This is an erratum published by The Canadian Heraldic Authority on October 29, 2022 that corrects an earlier notice published on March 19, 2022. The correction fixes a small set of registrations and confirmations of badges and arms, and restates a list of grants and registrations that were entered in the Public Register.

What it does#

  • Publishes an amendment to the Canada Gazette notice of March 19, 2022.
  • Corrects the listing for these badge-frame registrations (all dated January 20, 2022), including:
    • Registration of the Badge Frame for Schools and Training Centres of the Canadian Armed Forces, Ottawa, Ontario.
    • Registration of the Badge Frame for Miscellaneous Units of the Canadian Armed Forces, Ottawa, Ontario.
    • Registration of the Badge Frame for Miscellaneous Formations/Groups of the Canadian Armed Forces, Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Corrects the confirmation entry for the Arms of the Art Gallery of Guelph, dated February 15, 2022.
  • Re-states a set of grants, approvals and registrations entered in the Public Register by Samy Khalid, Chief Herald of Canada, and noted by the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon. Examples in that list include:
    • Grant of Arms and Supporters to the Right Honourable Mary May Simon, dated August 15, 2022.
    • Grant of a Flag and Badge to the Department of the Environment of the Government of Canada for use by its Enforcement Branch (Gatineau, Quebec), dated April 15, 2022.
    • A number of individual grants and registrations for private persons and organizations (dates range through April–July 2022).

Who's affected#

  • People and organizations named in the entries, for example recipients of grants or registrations and units of the Canadian Armed Forces that use the corrected badge frames.
  • Institutions that rely on the official Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges — for example the Art Gallery of Guelph and the Department of the Environment (Enforcement Branch).
  • Researchers, historians, heraldry applicants and anyone who uses the Gazette or the Public Register as the authoritative source of heraldic records.

If you are not mentioned by name in the notice, it is unlikely you will be directly affected.

Why it matters#

  • It keeps the official public record accurate. The Public Register is the authoritative list of granted and registered arms, flags and badges in Canada.
  • For the named recipients and organizations, accuracy matters when they display, publish or legally rely on their heraldic emblems.
  • For the broader public, this is a routine administrative correction rather than a change in policy or law.
