Summary#

A notice says Innovation Federal Credit Union and ABCU Credit Union Ltd. plan to seek federal approval to become one federal credit union under the Bank Act (Canada). If approved, the merged credit union would be based in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and the proposed effective date is April 1, 2026.

What it does#

  • On or after August 18, 2025, Innovation Federal Credit Union and ABCU Credit Union Ltd. intend to file a joint application with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions asking the Minister of Finance to:
    • issue letters patent continuing ABCU Credit Union Ltd. as a federal credit union, and
    • immediately issue letters patent of amalgamation to continue both organizations as a single federal credit union under the name Innovation Federal Credit Union.
  • The proposed head office for the merged credit union is Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
  • The applicants say the amalgamation would take effect on April 1, 2026, or another date set in the letters patent.
  • People who object to the plan can send a written objection to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (by mail or email) on or before September 16, 2025.

Who's affected#

  • Members and customers of ABCU Credit Union Ltd. and Innovation Federal Credit Union.
  • Employees and local communities served by those credit unions, especially in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
  • Other businesses or partners that deal with either credit union.
  • The general public only to the extent that local banking services or branch arrangements could change.

Why it matters#

  • The two credit unions would become one organization. That can affect where decisions are made, how services are delivered, and possibly membership terms, branch locations or staffing over time.
  • The notice starts a formal review process by federal regulators — it does not mean approval is guaranteed.
  • Members and interested people have until September 16, 2025 to register objections that regulators will consider.
