Summary

Summary#

This Order adds Whitefish River First Nation to the schedule of the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement Act. The change takes effect on April 1, 2026.

What it does#

  • Adds the name Whitefish River First Nation (also listed in French as Première Nation Whitefish River) to the schedule of the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement Act.
  • Brings the Act into line with an amendment to the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement that makes Whitefish River a party to that agreement.
  • As a party to the Governance Agreement, governance provisions of the Indian Act will no longer apply to Whitefish River First Nation for matters covered by the Agreement.
  • The Order’s effective date is April 1, 2026.

Who's affected#

  • Citizens and residents of Whitefish River First Nation. They will be governed by the community’s laws under the Governance Agreement for matters covered by that agreement.
  • The Anishinabek Nation, including its government B’Maakonigan, which now includes Whitefish River as a participating First Nation.
  • Federal officials involved in implementing the Agreement, including Crown‑Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada.
  • Other Anishinabek First Nations may see administrative or coordination effects, but the Order itself adds only Whitefish River to the Act.

Why it matters#

  • The change gives Whitefish River First Nation formal recognition as a self‑governing party under the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement. That means the community can make its own laws on governance, membership and elections in ways the Agreement allows.
  • It aligns federal law (the Act) with the Agreement so there is no mismatch between them.
  • The move is part of a broader effort to support Indigenous self‑determination and the transfer of certain governance powers away from the Indian Act. The Order takes effect on April 1, 2026.
