Summary
Summary#
On February 28, 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency published notices under the Income Tax Act saying it will revoke the registered charity status of a number of organizations. Four charities were named for failing to meet parts of the Act, and a much larger list received notices of intention to revoke for missing required filings; the notices say the revocations are effective on the publication date.
What it does#
- Announces formal revocation actions by the Canada Revenue Agency against specific registered charities.
- One short list of charities (four organizations) was proposed for revocation for “failure to meet the parts of the Income Tax Act.” Those four are:
- KEPHA FOUNDATION SOCIETY (Abbotsford, B.C.)
- MONKMAN HOMESTEAD PRESERVATION SOCIETY (Grande Prairie, Alta.)
- HOPE HOMES FOR THE HANDICAPPED (Cookstown, Ont.)
- COMMUNITY THAT CARES ASSOCIATION (Abbotsford, B.C.)
- A much larger list of charities (churches, cultural groups, museums, local associations and others across multiple provinces) received notices of intention to revoke because they did not meet filing requirements under the Income Tax Act. Examples from that list include:
- FABRIQUE DE LA PAROISSE STE‑MARTHE‑DE‑GASPÉ (Qc)
- FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH (Perth, Ont.)
- FOREST HILL UNITED CHURCH (Kitchener, Ont.)
- GEORGIAN TRIANGLE TOURIST ASSOCIATION AND CONVENTION BUREAU (Collingwood, Ont.)
- ANISHNABE MIKINACK KINAMAKAMIK INC. (Fort Alexander, Man.)
- The notices were signed by Sharmila Khare, Director General, Charities Directorate.
- The notices state the revocations take effect on the date the notice appears in the Canada Gazette (the publication date, February 28, 2026).
Who's affected#
- The named charities on both lists. The first list has four named organizations; the second list includes many more organizations from across Canada.
- Donors to those charities — donations made after revocation may not qualify for official charitable donation receipts.
- People and communities who receive services from these charities — programs or supports could be disrupted if the organizations change status or operations.
- It is not clear from the notice whether any of the named charities have already appealed or taken steps to correct the issues.
Why it matters#
- Registered charity status matters because it allows an organization to issue official donation receipts and gives it certain tax privileges. Losing that status can affect fundraising and finances.
- For donors, a revoked registration can mean no tax credit for recent or future donations that would otherwise qualify.
- For communities, sudden or permanent loss of a charity’s registration can threaten local services, events, or programs run by that organization.
- The notice is an official public record of these actions; affected charities, donors, and community partners may want to confirm current status with the Canada Revenue Agency or the charities themselves.
