Carney pledges continued sanctions and air-defence support for Ukraine
Canada says it will maintain sanctions on Russia and work with allies to strengthen support for Ukraine’s air defences.
Summary
Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about Russia’s attacks and support for Ukraine.
- Carney said Canada will maintain its sanctions on Russia and tighten them where effective. Canada has imposed more than 3,500 sanctions in response to Russia’s violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
- The leaders discussed working with allies to increase support for Ukraine’s air defences. Canada most recently announced $355 million for that purpose.
- Canada has committed more than $8.5 billion in military support and more than $750 million for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
The leaders also discussed a new U.S.-Russia diesel supply agreement, which Carney said would provide revenue to Russia and oppose efforts to build peace and stability in Europe.
