Manitoba discusses U.S. trade ties as $100M in support targets businesses and workers

The premier and Canada’s U.S. ambassador discussed trade uncertainty, while Manitoba points to new supports for affected employers and workers.

Summary

Premier Wab Kinew met with Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, to discuss trade uncertainty and ways to support Manitoba businesses and exporters. Wiseman also met with business, labour and Indigenous representatives.

Manitoba says it recently announced $100 million in targeted supports for businesses and workers affected by the trade dispute. The measures include financing, export assistance, wage subsidies, tax-payment deferrals and expanded agricultural loan guarantees.

The province says the support is intended to help employers retain workers, maintain operations and explore new markets.
