More pharmacies can request drug coverage online for patients

Saskatchewan is expanding an online process that lets participating pharmacists seek coverage decisions for eligible patients’ prescription drugs.

Summary

Saskatchewan is expanding an online application that lets participating community pharmacists request Exception Drug Status (EDS) coverage for select medications on behalf of eligible patients.

  • Who can apply: Physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists can submit requests. Patients cannot apply directly.
  • Rollout: The application began at 10 community pharmacies in August. Up to 50 are expected to participate this fall, depending on readiness, training and implementation needs.
  • Why it matters: Online requests are intended to reduce administrative work and help eligible patients get coverage decisions faster, including when the Saskatchewan Drug Plan is closed.

The long-term goal is to make the application available in hospitals, primary care centres and community pharmacies across the province.
