This bill directs the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense, Policy and Programs to seek an agreement with a University Affiliated Research Center affiliated with United States Strategic Command. That center must conduct an independent scientific assessment of whether partial-body radiation shielding that preserves bone marrow can improve survivability after gamma radiation exposure. The assessment must review peer-reviewed literature, laboratory studies, and relevant experimental data. It must evaluate (1) the likelihood of developing Acute Radiation Syndrome, (2) the severity of Acute Radiation Syndrome if it occurs, and (3) overall mortality. The bill requires the Assistant Secretary to seek the agreement within 30 days of enactment and to submit the assessment findings to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees within 150 days of enactment.
The bill requires the Department of Defense to arrange an independent scientific study and to report the results to Congressional Armed Services committees. It does not itself change medical care, defenses, or benefits. There is no immediate change to services or requirements for individual people stated in the bill.
The bill text does not specify any funding amounts or a source of funds. No publicly available information on estimated costs is included in the bill text or metadata.
