Safe Passage on Interstates Act

Summary#

The bill would make it a federal offense to knowingly obstruct normal use of an Interstate highway. Covered actions include deliberately delaying traffic, standing or approaching a vehicle, or endangering a vehicle’s safe movement, when done with intent to obstruct. Lawful activities conducted or authorized by federal, state, or local government are exempt. The bill sets higher penalties for obstructing an emergency vehicle and for violations that result in death.

What it means for you#

If enacted, a person who commits the offense could face a fine of up to $10,000, up to 15 years in prison, or both. Knowingly obstructing an authorized emergency vehicle could raise the maximums to a $15,000 fine and 20 years in prison. If a violation results in someone’s death, imprisonment could be for any term of years or for life.
