Veterans Fellowship Act

Summary#

The bill would create a pilot program for short-term fellowships for veterans. The Labor Department’s Assistant Secretary for Veterans’ Employment and Training would select three to five states. Each state would work with a nonprofit organization to run a program where veterans can spend up to 20 weeks as fellows with an employer, receive a monthly stipend, and have a chance to take a long-term job with that employer. The Comptroller General would report on the pilot within four years after it begins.

What it means for you#

Veterans in participating states could take part in a fellowship lasting no more than 20 weeks. The fellowship must provide a monthly stipend and an opportunity for long-term employment with the employer afterward. The bill does not specify how veterans would be selected.

Expenses#

The bill authorizes $10 million per year for fiscal years 2025 through 2029, in addition to funds already available under an existing federal program. It does not require that these amounts be appropriated.
