Joint Chiefs Reauthorization Act

Summary#

This bill updates and extends the Joint Chiefs Landscape Restoration Partnership program (a program added to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act). It changes the program's purposes to explicitly include recovery from wildfires and actions to enhance soil, water, and related natural resources. It requires the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief to consider Forest Service management plans and to collaborate with the Forest Service on forestry science and practice using the best available science. The bill adds "post-wildfire impacts" to how projects may address wildfire risk, says project priorities can be tied to State forest action plans or similar plans, clarifies that projects must not conflict with the Forest Service roadless-area conservation rule and certain parts of 36 CFR part 294, and extends program authorization through 2031.

What it means for you#

  • Projects under the program should match priorities in State forest or similar plans.
