DoD and VA Credentialing Integration

Summary#

This bill directs the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to work together to choose and run one shared system for medical provider credentialing and privileging. Within 120 days after enactment, the two Departments must report to the House and Senate Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs committees about the credentialing systems they currently use. The report must describe system scope, stored data, portability of provider information, interoperability, risk management and adverse actions, limitations and gaps, and recommendations for scaling to a single uniform system. By January 1, 2027, the two Departments must jointly select one existing system in use by the Departments to serve as the joint uniform system. The selected system must be able to import and share provider credentialing and privileging information. By January 1, 2028, the Departments must certify in writing to the same committees that the joint system has been implemented and is operational.

What it means for you#

  • If you are a medical provider who works with the Defense Department or Veterans Affairs, the Departments are required to pick one shared credentialing and privileging system that can import and share provider information.
  • The bill sets deadlines for a report, a system selection, and a certification that the system is operational.
  • No immediate change is described for people who are not medical providers working with those Departments.
