The bill would direct the Secretary of Agriculture to promote salad bars in schools that take part in the National School Lunch Program. Within 90 days of enactment, the Secretary would create a communications plan and provide training and technical help. A competitive grant program would help schools or school food authorities pay schools a one-time amount for salad bar installation costs, including durable equipment. The Secretary could prioritize applicants serving schools with many students eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, schools in food deserts, or schools that provide nutrition education. The grant program would end after five years. The bill also requires a report on salad bar programs and grant results, followed by a revision of federal salad bar guidance. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce.
Schools and school food authorities could apply for grants to help install salad bars. School staff could receive training and technical assistance. The bill does not require a school to establish a salad bar.
The bill authorizes no additional appropriations and directs that its activities use amounts already available. It does not state a total cost.
