Detective Alvarez Post Office Naming

Summary#

This bill names the United States Postal Service building at 80 Atlantic Avenue in Oceanside, New York, the "Detective Luis G. Alvarez Post Office." The main change is only the official name of that postal facility. The bill’s broad goal is to honor Detective Luis G. Alvarez by giving his name to a local post office.

  • Main change: The Oceanside post office at that address would be officially known by the new name.
  • Legal effect in records: Any federal law, map, or document that refers to that facility would be treated as referring to the new name.
  • Does not change services: The bill does not change postal services, the building’s address, or how mail is delivered.
  • What is unclear: The bill text does not explain why this person was chosen or give details about costs or timing.

What it means for you#

  • Residents and businesses near the post office: The street address and mail delivery should stay the same. The building’s sign and official name would change.
  • People sending mail to that location: Mail addressed to the same street address will still arrive. Using the new name is optional for everyday mail.
  • Postal employees and management: USPS would need to update signage, internal databases, and any official references to the facility.
  • Local government and map services: Public maps and local guides may update the name over time.
  • General public: This is mainly a symbolic change to honor a person. It does not create or remove any rights or services.

Expenses#

No publicly available information on the bill’s cost is provided in the bill text or accompanying material.

  • This could mean small costs for the Postal Service to buy and install new signs and to update internal records and web listings.
  • There may be minor administrative work to update federal documents and maps that mention the facility.
  • The bill does not state who must pay these costs or give a fiscal estimate.

Proponents' View#

  • The bill appears intended to honor Detective Luis G. Alvarez by naming a public building after him.
  • Supporters may argue that naming a post office is a way to recognize local public service or sacrifice.
  • The change is symbolic and does not alter services, legal rights, or taxes.

Opponents' View#

  • One concern is the lack of any cost estimate; the bill does not explain the expected fiscal impact.
  • The bill does not state why this particular facility was chosen or provide background on the honoree.
  • This type of bill creates small administrative work for USPS and for updating maps and records.
  • The bill is narrowly focused and does not address broader policy or service issues at the Postal Service.
