This bill adds a new rule to the Federal Election Campaign Act. If a political committee pays a person to post content on an internet website, web application, or digital application, the post must clearly say it was paid for by that political committee. The rule covers audiovisual, text, graphic, and audio-only communications and says the statement must be easy to read or clearly spoken. The committee that makes the payment must tell the person being paid about the requirement when the payment is made. The bill does not apply to content posted on a political committee's own website. It also does not apply when a paid employee posts on their own social media and the only cost is their paid staff time, unless the employee's main job is posting on their own social media. The Federal Election Commission must write rules to implement this change by January 1, 2027. The changes apply to communications made on or after January 1, 2027 and take effect even if the Commission has not finished those rules.
If you see an online post paid for by a political committee, the post should say it was paid for by that committee. Political committees must tell people they pay about this requirement when they pay them. Posts on a committee's own website and some posts by the committee's paid employees are not covered by the rule.
