Extend the TikTok Deadline Act

Summary#

This bill changes one number in an existing law called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. It replaces the current 270-day deadline with a 540-day deadline for TikTok to be sold in order to avoid being banned.

The bill was introduced in the Senate on January 15, 2025, by Senators Edward Markey, Ron Wyden, Cory Booker, and Chris Van Hollen. It was read twice and referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

What it means for you#

If the underlying law were applied to TikTok, the company would have 540 days instead of 270 days to complete a sale to an owner that is not a designated foreign adversary in order to avoid a ban. The bill only changes the number of days in that specific deadline; it does not add other requirements or describe how a sale must be carried out.
