Carey Act Dam Funding Amendment

Full Title:
A bill to amend the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to authorize the use of funds for certain additional Carey Act projects, and for other purposes.

Summary#

This bill changes a section of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). It tells the Secretary to use amounts made available under section 40901(2)(B) to pay for the rehabilitation, reconstruction, or replacement of dams that were built under the Carey Act and still operate as dams. The Secretary can only use the money after making two findings: (1) that those dams have received the necessary funding to complete the work under the IIJA subsection in question, and (2) that amounts under section 40901(2)(B) remain available. The bill text also includes technical reorganization of paragraphs in that IIJA section.

What it means for you#

  • If you live near or use a dam built under the Carey Act, this bill could allow certain IIJA funds to be used to fix or replace that dam if the Secretary makes the two required determinations.
  • If you are not connected to a Carey Act dam, this bill likely has no direct effect on you.

Expenses#

  • The bill directs use of existing amounts made available under section 40901(2)(B) of the IIJA.
  • The bill text does not list any dollar amounts or give a cost estimate. No publicly available information on overall budget impact is included in the provided text.
