Emergency Inflation Relief Payments

Summary#

The proposal would provide an extra $200 per month from January through June 2026 to eligible people receiving Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement, veterans disability or pension benefits, or certain civil service retirement benefits. A person eligible through more than one program could receive only one payment per month. The proposal excludes some people whose regular benefits were withheld or reduced for specified reasons, and people who die before their payment is certified. Payments would not count as income or resources for federal and federally funded benefit programs, would not be taxable as federal income, and would be protected from certain offsets and assignments.

What it means for you#

If you meet the eligibility rules and live in an eligible U.S. state, district, or territory, you could receive up to six monthly payments of $200. Payments would be sent using the payment method or account on file with the relevant agency. The agencies would provide eligible people with a notice about their payment. The proposal has been introduced and referred to the Senate Finance Committee; it has not been enacted.

Expenses#

The proposal would appropriate funds for the payments, with no total amount specified. It also provides $113.1 million for agency administrative costs: $11 million for the Treasury, $83 million for the Social Security Administration, $1.1 million for the Railroad Retirement Board, $8 million for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and $10 million for the Office of Personnel Management.
