LNG Canada advances $33-billion Kitimat expansion

The expansion is set to double terminal capacity, create thousands of construction jobs, and link to a pipeline upgrade scheduled to start construction next year.

Summary

LNG Canada has approved a $33-billion Phase 2 expansion at its Kitimat, B.C., facility. The expansion will double terminal capacity to 28 million tonnes of LNG per year.

  • Jobs: LNG Canada expects more than 4,000 direct construction jobs. Coastal GasLink Phase 2 is expected to create over 2,000 jobs.
  • Pipeline: TC Energy has made a final investment decision on Coastal GasLink Phase 2, which will double the pipeline’s existing capacity. Construction is expected to start next year.
  • Indigenous participation: Five First Nations have an option to invest up to $1 billion for a majority ownership stake in the expansion’s new LNG storage tank.
  • Emissions: The release says the Kitimat operation is expected to have lower greenhouse gas emissions than any facility of a similar size operating today.
