Canada commits $82 million to expand ocean monitoring

Canada and the EU are backing a global system that supplies data for weather forecasts, climate predictions and coastal protection.

Summary

Canada and the European Union launched the OceanEye International Alliance in New York during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week.

  • Canada: $82 million over five years to expand its ocean-observation capacity.
  • EU: €92 million for ocean-observation activities.
  • Total pledges: More than $339 million, including financial contributions, in-kind support and assets such as research vessels, sensors and drones.

The support is intended to maintain observation platforms, fill critical data gaps and strengthen the coordination and reporting systems behind the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). GOOS provides about 120,000 observations each day from 8,000 platforms operated by 64 countries.

The alliance has 31 members. Further opportunities to pledge support are planned for international gatherings, including COP31 and the Our Ocean Conference in Halifax.
