Manitoba cuts rent hikes tied to building costs by 40%
Tenants can wait for a Residential Tenancy Branch ruling before paying a landlord’s requested increase, and the renters’ tax credit is rising to $675.
Summary
Manitoba is changing rent rules to reduce above-guideline increases related to landlords’ capital expenses. The amount of those costs that can be passed on to tenants will be cut by 40 per cent.
What changes:
- Tenants no longer have to pay a requested rent increase before the Residential Tenancy Branch rules on a landlord’s application. This change takes effect immediately.
- The Renters Affordability Tax Credit is increasing to $675, with benefit cheques issued throughout the year.
Earlier this year, the government raised the rent control threshold from $1,670 to $2,000, extending protections to more households.
