Flood barriers and road upgrades planned for two First Nations
Phase 1 will add clay dikes and improve roads to help protect homes and keep access routes open during floods.
Summary
Phase 1 of a long-term flood protection project is underway in Peguis First Nation and Fisher River Cree Nation.
Planned work includes:
- Clay dikes to protect Peguis’s central community area.
- Clay dikes for up to about 500 vulnerable homes across the two communities.
- Local road improvements to reduce overtopping and maintain access during floods.
Manitoba estimates the initiative will cost an additional $61.1 million. Indigenous Services Canada will reimburse eligible costs through its Emergency Management Assistance Program. The work is intended to reduce flood risks and protect homes and community infrastructure.
