New bill would curb unfair digital practices targeting young consumers
The proposal covers apps, games and social media, while school cellphone rules for grades 9–12 are set to take effect in February 2027.
Summary
New Brunswick has introduced a bill that would set consumer protections for people under 16 using digital platforms, goods and services, including apps, games and social media. The Financial and Consumer Services Commission would administer and enforce the proposed rules.
The bill would put responsibility on providers to prevent practices such as hiding important information, pressuring young people to make purchases, and using communications that unfairly influence their decisions.
It would also legislate amendments to Policy 311 and the creation of Policy 902, policies aimed at reducing classroom distractions and supporting learning and social connections. Cellphone and personal-device rules for students in grades 9–12 are scheduled to take effect at the start of the second semester in February 2027.
