NWT sets a 2050 plan for energy and climate action
A new territory-wide strategy will guide energy and climate decisions through 2050, with its first implementation cycle running through March 2033.
Summary
The Northwest Territories’ new strategy sets a coordinated direction for energy and climate decisions through 2050. It replaces the territory’s two 2030 strategies and includes the commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Initial priorities include:
- Modernizing energy systems and supporting community planning
- Strengthening homes, buildings, infrastructure and supply chains
- Preparing for climate-related emergencies and impacts on health
- Supporting innovation, economic growth and continued access to the land
The first implementation cycle starts this spring and runs through March 2033. An implementation plan is being developed to identify priorities and responsibilities; detailed initiatives, investments and timelines will be set through that work.
