Firearms amnesty now runs 90 days past a Supreme Court ruling
Eligible owners and businesses remain protected from criminal liability if they follow the amnesty conditions while the court appeals continue.
Summary
The federal firearms amnesty will continue past its former October 30, 2026 expiry date. It will end 90 days after the Supreme Court of Canada decides appeals challenging the firearms prohibitions; the decision is not expected before mid-2027.
- The extension applies to amnesty orders tied to prohibitions introduced in May 2020, December 2024 and March 2025.
- Affected individuals and businesses remain protected from criminal liability during the amnesty, as long as they follow its conditions.
- Saskatchewan’s Firearms Verification and Appraisal Service can help owners check whether firearms are prohibited, apply for eligible exemption certificates, and obtain appraisals for prohibited firearms, ammunition and accessories.
Owners can contact the Saskatchewan Firearms Office at 1-833-792-2706 for service information.
