In God We Trust License Plates

Summary#

The bill would require the commissioner of motor vehicles to issue an “In God We Trust” license plate to any New York resident who requests one. It would take effect 180 days after becoming law. The bill was introduced and referred to the Senate Rules Committee.

What it means for you#

A resident could request the plate by applying in the form required by the commissioner. The plate would be designed and issued after either a $6,000 surety bond is provided or at least 200 orders with nonrefundable service charges are received. If fewer than 200 sets are sold within two years after the plates first go on sale, the department could recover a share of the bond based on the shortfall.

Expenses#

Applicants would pay the regular vehicle registration fee and an additional annual service charge of $25. The bill says the service charges would go to the distinctive plate development fund for plate design, production, advertising, and distribution.
