Small Business AI Advancement Act

Full Title:
Small Business Artificial Intelligence Advancement Act

Summary#

This bill directs the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop or identify and share resources to help small businesses understand, adopt, and integrate artificial intelligence (AI). The resources may include technical standards, best practices, benchmarks, methods, procedures, processes, and case studies. The bill requires resources to be generally usable by many small businesses, to promote basic understanding and proper use cases, to be technology-neutral, and to align with international voluntary standards and existing federal materials (including a risk management framework and cybersecurity awareness activities). NIST must review and update the resources within two years of enactment and at least every two years after that. NIST must coordinate distribution with the Small Business Administration (SBA) resource partners. Use of the resources is voluntary. NIST must submit a report to specified congressional committees within four years listing the resources, feedback from users and disseminators, and recommendations for further actions.

  • Small businesses: May get free, voluntary guides, standards, and case studies about using AI, distributed through SBA partners. These materials are meant to be practical and technology-neutral.
  • NIST: Must create, review, update, and share the resources and report to Congress. This work is subject to available funding.
  • SBA: Will help distribute the resources through its resource partners.
