This bill, the PROTECT Act, tells the Secretary of Homeland Security to share guidance about best practices for handling personally identifiable information (PII). The guidance must cover how agencies and private entities should handle PII about officers, officials, employees, and contractors, and what steps those people can take to help keep themselves safe. DHS must issue the guidance within one year of the law and then again every four years.
If you work for or with a federal, state, or local agency, or are in an "appropriate" private sector entity, DHS would provide guidance on protecting PII about officers and staff. The guidance also would describe actions those officers and staff can take to improve their personal safety. The bill defines PII broadly as any information that can directly or indirectly identify a person, including linked information, no matter their citizenship or immigration status.
