Artemis II Medal for Crew

Summary#

This bill directs Congress to award a Congressional Gold Medal to each member of the Artemis II crew. It orders the Treasury (through the U.S. Mint) to strike gold medals that show the four astronauts, and allows the Mint to sell bronze duplicates to cover costs. The bill’s stated goal is to recognize the Artemis II mission for advancing human space exploration and for a list of mission “firsts” and records.

  • Main change: Authorizes a gold medal for each Artemis II crew member and lets the Mint sell bronze copies.
  • Who is named in the bill’s findings: the four Artemis II crew members and several other mission leaders and support staff are described for their roles and firsts.
  • Design direction: Each gold medal must depict the crew of four astronauts.
  • Payment authority: Costs may be charged to the U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund; proceeds from bronze sales go back into that fund.

What it means for you#

  • Artemis II crew: Each named crew member would receive a Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of the mission.
  • U.S. Mint / Treasury: The Mint must design and make the gold medals and may mint and sell bronze duplicates under its rules.
  • People who buy memorabilia: The public could buy bronze duplicate medals if the Mint chooses to offer them. Price must be enough to cover production costs.
  • Taxpayers / federal budget watchers: The bill authorizes the Mint to charge its Public Enterprise Fund for medal costs. There is no dollar amount included in the bill.
  • NASA and mission staff: The bill lists many mission “firsts” and personnel in its findings, but the legal effect is limited to awarding medals to the Artemis II crew.

Expenses#

No publicly available information.

  • The bill allows the U.S. Mint to charge the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund for costs to make the medals.
  • Money from selling duplicate bronze medals must be deposited back into that Mint fund.
  • The bill does not give a cost estimate, a limit on spending, or a schedule for production or sale.
  • Any ceremony costs or administrative costs for arranging the presentation are not itemized.

Proponents' View#

  • The bill appears intended to honor the Artemis II crew for specific achievements and milestones listed in its findings.
  • It highlights mission records and “firsts,” such as the longest human distance from Earth, the first crewed lunar flight in decades, and individual firsts for crew and mission leaders.
  • Awarding a Congressional Gold Medal is a formal, symbolic way to recognize these contributions to human space exploration.
  • Allowing bronze duplicates to be sold could let the public obtain a keepsake while helping offset production costs.

Opponents' View#

  • One concern is the lack of a cost estimate or spending cap; the bill lets the Mint charge its fund but does not say how much this will cost.
  • It is unclear how many bronze duplicates may be sold, at what price, or whether sales will fully cover all costs.
  • The bill does not spell out medal specifications (weight, purity, or number of gold medals), timing of the presentation, or details about the ceremony.
  • The findings name many individuals in mission roles, but the legal award is limited to the Artemis II crew; that difference could create confusion about who is officially recognized.
