FLIGHT Act

Summary#

This bill, called the FLIGHT Act, adds a new section (42309) to chapter 423 of title 49, U.S. Code. It requires covered air carriers to notify each passenger on a domestic or international flight when the flight has a delayed departure or a taxi delay of 15 minutes or more. Notices must be sent at least once every 15 minutes until the delay ends. Notices must be sent by email or text message and must include the new estimated time of departure and arrival, when applicable. Notices must also include a way for a passenger to opt out of further messages. The bill also adds a clerical change to the chapter analysis to list the new section.

What it means for you#

If you are on a flight operated by a covered air carrier and your plane is delayed on the ground for 15 minutes or more, the airline must send you updates by email or text at least every 15 minutes. Those updates should tell you the new expected departure and arrival times and let you stop getting updates if you choose.
