AI for Mainstreet Act

Full Title:
AI for Mainstreet Act

Summary#

This bill changes the Small Business Act so Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) must help small businesses evaluate and use artificial intelligence (AI). The SBDCs would provide information, guidance, and training on AI best practices and on using AI to plan for unexpected events, protect data and intellectual property, improve cybersecurity, meet regulatory requirements, and build customer trust. The bill also directs SBDCs to help businesses incorporate AI into their operations and to do outreach about AI when practical. The bill defines "artificial intelligence" by referring to the definition in the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020. The bill says no additional funds are authorized to carry out these changes.

What it means for you#

  • If you run a small business: SBDCs are required to offer guidance, training, and outreach about using AI in business operations. This could include help with security, data protection, and planning for unexpected events.
  • If you work at an SBDC: your center would be responsible for providing the listed AI assistance and outreach to small businesses to the extent practical.
  • If you are another stakeholder: No publicly available information on other specific effects.

Expenses#

The bill states: "No additional amounts are authorized to carry out this Act or the amendments made by this Act." There is no publicly available information in the bill text about new or estimated funding amounts.
